| Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! | |
| Listed below are some of the things I have been up to in 2009. I am still working as a Government Contractor and kept up with my recreational activities in Civil War Reenacting and Living History along the way. I've enjoyed 2009 to the greatest extent possible and I hope everyone of my family, friends and visitors had a good year also.. | |
| I started off the New Year by jumping in the Atlantic Ocean. For the past 20 years the owners of Dunleavey's Pub on Sullivan's Island have held a fund-raiser for the Special Olympics on New Year's Day. In my travels in 2008, I spent some time at Dunleavey's and was told about the "Polar Bear Plunge" and decided to try it out. The day was cold by Charleston standards, 40 degrees. Over 4,000 participants and spectators gathered on the beach, many fortified by assorted spirits, and took the plunge into the ocean. The water temperature was about 55 degrees, which is not much cooler than Lake Erie is the summer. I took this picture while out in the ocean to give an impression of the fun. |

During March, I spent 5 days marching along the Red River in Natchitoches Parrish in Louisiana. The event was called 'Into the Piney Woods' and I was the sole 'Color Guard' of the 24th Iowa. On the final day of the event the weather took a decided turn for the worst. It was cold and raining, I loved it. |
| This past May, I participated in the 145th Anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of Resaca, Georgia. The image to the left was struck using 19th Century techniques by Wendell Decker and includes my friends in the Tramp Brigade. Pictured clockwise from the bottom right are Brian McGarrahan, Scott Malone, Mike Kirby, John "Red" Turner and I. Brian's a Lieutenant with the Horry County Fire Department, Scott and Mike are both Sergeants in the Marines and "Red" is Marine Captain. So you could call this picture "Four Marines and a Fireman". |

At the end of May, the Tramp Brigade hosted a living history at the National Park Service's Fort Moultrie Unit to recreate the life of the Federal Garrison in 1859 before the start of the Civil War. I was the event coordinator and portrayed a Officer of the Corps of Engineers assigned to Fort Moultrie to supervise construction on the works there and at Fort Sumter. |
| Early in June, I went to New York City to join my comrades in the 69th NYSV Historical Association in commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral built in 1809. I carried the National Color during the parade. |

Like the past few years, I joined my friends from Virginia in VA Beach on Labor Day Weekend were several of them ran in the Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon. I snapped this picture on the way down Pacific Avenue to Mahi-Mah's for a post race mimosa and lunch. |
| After the fun times in VA Beach, I worked the following week in Virginia so I could attend a living history at Fortress Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. There I was part of an Artillery Gun Crew. This image was taken just as I was preparing to swab the bore of a 12 pound howitzer. |

In October, I went back to the Westville Historic Village to help with some maintenance projects. I was assigned to clean a cabin that had been used to store pig feed, sweet feed, hay and even ginned cotton at various times. The picture at left is the result. Jim Butler coordinated the tasks and helped me with what was messy and in many instances disagreeable job. It was most disagreeable to the various cockroaches, mice, snakes and one large Norwegian rat and her brood of ratlings that were displaced by our efforts. |
| To finish out the year the members of the Tramp Brigade participated in "Soldiers through Time" at Fort Moultrie on 19 December. This year marked the 200th anniversary of Fort Moultrie's completion and occupation as a U.S. Army Installation. To support the event we provided Federal and Confederate impressions from 1842 to 1865. |
